Early Treatment

Why is Early Treatment Necessary

According to the American Association of Orthodontics, children should have an initial orthodontic screening by the age of 7-years-old. Early treatment, or interceptive treatment, is a proactive orthodontic approach designed for children in mixed demotion. Mixed dentition is a combination of adult teeth and baby teeth, and this is the perfect time to address orthodontic issues before they become more complex. By identifying issues like crooked teeth or misaligned jaws early on, our team can help guide your child’s teeth into healthier development. Early treatment can help prevent more complicated treatment in the future, help decrease overall treatment time, and can improve the look and function of your child’s teeth and jaws.

Early treatment, sometimes referred to as Phase 1 treatment, is used to negate abnormal development before it leads to further orthodontic issues, and helps encourage proper teeth eruption and proper jaw development. Interceptive early treatment can be helpful in changing the aesthetics of your child’s smile, and it can even impact the overall function of their teeth and jaws in the long run.

Early Treatment FAQs

Are you considering early orthodontic treatment for your child? We have compiled some of our patients most frequently asked questions about early treatment to answer any questions you might have. If you have any additional questions that aren’t answered below, feel free to call our office so we can help!
When should my child start early treatment?
As the American Association of Orthodontics suggests, children should visit an orthodontist before age 7. Most children have some baby and some adult teeth by this time, and it’s usually when orthodontic issues arise.
At Stoll Orthodontics, appliances we commonly use for early treatment are expanders, retainers, and limited braces. After Dr. Stoll evaluates your little one’s smile, he will develop a personalized treatment plan and determine the best appliance for them.
Not every child needs early treatment, and that’s precisely why children should visit our office by age 7, so Dr. Stoll can determine if it’s necessary for your child.
Early treatment can correct issues early on and keep them from becoming more severe. This can significantly reduce treatment time and can also save you money and more extensive treatment down the road.
Every patient has specific needs, and each treatment time varies, but typically early treatment time ranges from 6 months to 2 years. After your child receives early treatment, we continue to monitor their teeth and growth to determine if later treatment is necessary.
